Uranium Glass Soda Siphon

£79.00
Sold Out

This early to mid 20th century soda siphon.

Unusually, it was made in pale green uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass with a noticeable feature of a separate foot

The front of the soda siphon has the following wording:

"Eau de Seltz Limonade, Brasserie Hary Lorne, Fabrique de Glace" which translates as "Soda Water Lemonade, Hary Lorne Brewery, Ice Factory"

The metal cap is engraved with "gueret frères paris etain sans plomb" that seems to translate as "Gueret Brothers, Paris, Unleaded Tin".

Uranium glass glows under bright light which is a safe chemical (not radioactive) process. It is particularly noticeable under UV light, as shown in one of our pictures. To make it, very small quantities of uranium powder was added to the glass mix. It's a practice which fell out of favour during the 1950s.

Siphons were used globally in cafes, bars and hotels throughout the 20th century. They were designed to be reusable and tended to have a very hard life.

They were made in very large numbers, but branded in far more limited numbers to carry the supplier's or customer's branding.

Glass inner tube/straw missing. The bottle itself, whilst it looks fabulous under UV light, has been well used, and its general day to day appearance is quite worn and scratched, with stains on the inside of the bottle. The top cap is also heavily corroded.
